If you've used WAMP, then you did NOTHING like setting up a VM (I prefer Oracles Virtual Box which you discovered apparently later in the thread). Your mighty WAMP that you have used has an installer. So really any idiot that can click on a file can install it. Now, install Virtual Box and you STILL have to download the ISO image of the Linux "flavor" you want to play with. Then you have to go through the process of installing from that ISO into a virtual machine that you have created (defining the amount of RAM, processor use allowance, etc). It's like setting up a VPS on your PC. In fact, they use the same theory that the VPS's do, except the software for VPS creation runs on the server (ProxMox, SolusVM, etc). Once you INSTALL the Linux OS, then you will have to install any related applications that you use. You have to decide if you want to use nginx, Apache, LiteSpeed, OpenLitespeed, Tomcat, etc. Then you have to install all the prerequisites. Your "installing" ImageMagic on a "live site" didn't do what you think it did. ALL you did was use a control panel to enable the PHP PECL to be used. I promise you on those shitty shared plans you are on you did NOT have the ability to "install" imagemagick, but that's a common mistake made by those that don't know what the shit they are talking about. And does not surprise me in the least that you "never heard anything like that before". Hell, I was using VirtualBox when it was owned by InnoTek (late 2000's). And again, it's no surprise that you "have not seen that before" as you would have to actually NEED it to use it. Before you continue trying to give Linux advice, I'd strongly suggest (if your computer can handle it) downloading VirtualBox and attempting to learn it before you make attempts to give advice on something you know absolutely nothing about but try to appear to have knowledge of. Google can be a powerful tool... it can also make one look like a powerfully idiotic tool.

Gary's to busy trying to give advice on Linux, a subject he knows absolutely jack shit about. Guess Gary doesn't know the difference between a GUI interface and a TEXT based interface. Gary, for a permanent reminder I'll post the reply here (since the shout box history may not keep long enough) - On a Linux server only idiots (or people with tons of resources that they don't mind wasting) install a Windows Manager. You perform a minimal install on a server as you want to maximize the resources available to your job specific applications. In the case of a web server setup that's the HTTP, PHP-FPM, any cache, and mail related processes. When you interface with the VPS/dedi you do it typically (unless you use a control panel, which again robs resources) via SSH which puts you into a terminal environment (think DOS days). You can't use those fancy GUI utils in a text based environment. So, in a nutshell, please shut the fuck up trying to give advice on something it is readily apparently that you know absolutely nothing about other than what you can find via Google.

Then explain why Dallas (and many others) are facing recruiting challenges. Police Face Severe Shortage of Recruits Memphis police officer shortage getting worse San Jose declares state of emergency over police staffing shortage Doesn't do a damn bit of good if your department has XXX number of open positions but you can only get YYY qualified applicants. Or do you propose that they drop their hiring standards. But that is what some departments have done - and guess what, they have a large # of issues with those that were hired in under those lower standards. As Gomer Pyle USMC used to say "Surprise, Surprise, Surprise". And I'm pretty sure that those "yearly increasing # of cops" include federal law enforcement, the majority of which is a joke as most of their time is spent sitting in an office playing "drone". Border Patrol is one of the few exceptions. Even the FBI spends the majority of their time in their cushy offices. Yeah, it can be dangerous for them civilians entering the transactional marketplace for mind altering substances. The Most Dangerous Jobs in America Well their stats are at odds with another one. Funny you seemed to ignore that (or you didn't see it before you attempted to try and find something. that supports your supposition Here, let me give you those stats (once more) and highlight for the year you are referring to in the above link and tell me the difference. And nowhere did I claim it was the "most" dangerous profession. But once more you try to divert the conversation down another path because you are having problems with your allegations. I also know a few folks that have been loggers in their "past life". From what they related, it's not abnormal to have someone come in working that was still drunk from the night before and cannabis usage during work was a normal part of the day. Also had an Uncle who had 2 sons that worked trawlers in the Gulf of Mexico. Not as dangerous as your "crabbers/lobster chasers" but booze breaks were a normal part of their day also. And I agree, there are many in law enforcement that have no business now. But guess what, it's your generation (most likely your age range) that is causing the majority of the issues. Should tell you something about society but you will be to blind to notice it. But again, I ask you directly - what job profession are you in? That way we can look at how perfect they are, because we all know you'd never associate with a profession that had any issues. Or are you another nutless wonder that is afraid to admit in public what they do for a living? Oh, but with your penchant for secrecy how would anyone really trust what you said anyway. Those that want to hide normally have secrets that they desire to keep from others to prevent embarrassment. They also tend to be the ones that shout the loudest.

I've arrested several for DUI with a 0.00 alcohol level... and many of them spent 6 months to 15 years in jail/prison. Your point is? You base it upon the totality of the circumstances. Just because they are 0.00% BAC doesn't mean that they aren't impaired. Oh, wait, that's right - drugs don't effect anyone but the person using them (either prescription or illicit) when one is driving. Well, let's see. Let me shoot you in the chest with a .45ACP (you with no armor) loaded with CCI Gold Dot's. When you get up I'll let you do the same to me while I'm wearing armor. See who can play that game longer. One guess - you'd be worm food at the first shot. Funny how facts can fuck up your "statistics" that you attempt to use. Last estimate was that over the last 30 years at least 3000 officers lives have been saved (in US) by body armor (that was the last stuff I looked at a while ago). When you consider that only in the last 10-12 years has body armor become more prevalent then that should indicate to ANY reasonable person that the numbers skew higher towards the latter part of the period. Those officers (which your precious stats do NOT include) would have had (on average) a 77% higher chance of death without the body armor.

And just some stuff for your perusal

Sorry to fuck those stats up, but body armor (and the use thereof) throw those WAY off kilter. Back in '83 when I started, maybe one officer in 20 had (or could afford) body armor. It was around $400 for a lower end Second Chance vest (which would be around a threat level 1 now). Now, if they had of included officers that had been SAVED by the body armor taking the shot, I'd place more weight on them. Studies show that officers that are wearing body armor and shot in the torso are 77% less likely to die.

Nope Like this Dashcam video shows Texas officer helping boy who had seizure or this Charlotte police officer helps out high school student with autism or this Ohio officer helps 7-year-old boy selling stuffed animal for food or this Police officer buys bed, TV, Wii for teen or this Two Los Angeles police officers pulled over to help a high school kid tie a tie or this Police Officer Honored for Saving 3-Year-Old Boy Just a few Hate to bust your fucking bubble, but the above type behavior is pretty standard whereas your whiney ass complaints are few and far between on occurrences.

Because some want to help people (in fact a large number used to, but now with you young doper crowd it's more about personal gratification). Now, what field are YOU actively employed in - besides playing in the one full of poppies?
-
Pretty sure this year is running at a record HIGH and not a low. 64 so far this year, 42 last year (in the US) so I don't know where the fuck you got your make believe stats for officer deaths from. Looks like around a 50% INCREASE over the previous year, but what do you expect from someone who quotes a comedian as a source. :scream: And boo-fucking hoo for those idiots. You bitch when the PoPo uses force.. then you bitch when they use alternative methods. Guess since it was cold they should have used napalm instead. Oh, I know you don't have what it takes to be one from your posts.... nor do I doubt that you lack the qualifications (drug use normally kills it for most prospective hires for most departments). And if you DID go to work as an officer, you would be one of those that cost another their life from inaction - either from fear or refusal to do your duty.

So says one that has never had the balls to strap on the badge nor do any enforcement action. You would shit your pants if you had to deal with half the stuff that an LEO does in a normal day. Arm chair quarterbacks are a dime a dozen. How about growing a pair and taking a job doing it if you want to change it. Change works best from inside. Do mistakes happen.. yes, because it's human nature. Guess what - shit happens, and sometimes it's bad shit. An LEO's job is not to take unnecessary chances (they don't get paid enough). And sorry, if you are within 15ft with a knife and you don't drop it when commanded, you are dog food if showing any aggressive action(s).

Yeah, but you see them with a violent drunk it's the same here as over there. Sometimes some people are just to fucking dumb to listen to reason. And sorry, if you are a dumb enough fuck to bring a knife to a gun fight, guess what - you get to be a holey dumb fuck frequently.
-
Because honestly I didn't see any "brutality" that frequently. And when I did I reported it to IAD and did my best (which was usually pretty good) to get them off the force. Normally when someone "got the shit beat out of them" that's because they were trying to do the same back to us. Fight fire with fire. You swing, we swing. You shoot, we shoot. We weren't there to fucking coddle you with sweet words if you wanted to fight - other than to tell 'em that was probably not a road they wanted to go down. You have to remember, our job wasn't to fight by the marquess of queensbury rules - it was to come out on top and take the idiot to jail. I know several times I could have legitimately capped some idiots but chose other methods to take care of them (bean bag shotgun does a really nice job if you are a good shot). It always amazed me when someone wanted to fight and then came out on the short end of the stick and then started crying "brutality". Fuck 'em. They started the behavior and could have stopped it at any time. And no, I don't have to coddle my words nicely any longer since I no longer do the "job". As for the oft repeated hue and cry that "they prey upon the black community".... well, where I worked the majority of the drug houses were located in those areas. Guess what, just like fishermen, you go to where the hot spots to catch 'em are. We caught black sellers, black buyers, white buyers, hispanic buyers... we were an equal opportunity catching department. Most of those nasty old "white boys" were busy making meth - which we left to the drug task force to work them as it's more detailed than driving up on a deal going down. And sorry, I do consider the source.. and The Jimmy Dore Show (an alleged comedian) doesn't rank real high on my reliable resource scale. I can't speak for "large" departments as I really had no desire to work for any agency with more than about 70 sworn officers. Once they become larger than that, it became to impersonal.

And on the Linux site, he's being pretty much on topic with his posts. Now, his convo's are another matter. ;)
