What big change for XF 2.3 has been a year in the making?

According to Chris D:

There is a significant change coming in 2.3 which I don’t want to give too much away about right now but it’s been in development and has been for the majority of 2022. It will be worth the wait but it isn’t ready to show you yet

What could they possibly be developing for almost a year to include in a point release?

Rewritten Resource Manager that nobody uses?

Tracy Perry Funded Social Groups?

Flash Arcade!?!?

A Useful 'Block User' Function?

A Dark Theme?

Some random functionality that nobody asked for?

New moderation tools to prevent child porn content? AKA "The Dragonbyte Tool"

Personally, I think it's some kind of aggregation site or tool that combines a number of XenForo sites into one digest. It would be free for cloud customers, and a subscription for others. I think that's why the "Showcase" is petered out. Kier started that, and then had a revelation that it would be shit and completely useless, and decided to develop a better way to engage members.

This is just pulling random shit out of thin air. Just guessing. If true, it'd be too little, too late, and still wouldn't make anybody happy.

Is it crazy? What else could it be?

Tracy Perry Funded Social Groups?

This IS my guess. One-Up paid EM billions to develope it AS long as THEY promised a road MAP for future development AND to clean UP THE suggestions forum.

It's going to be interesting to find out what Chris referenced... I REALLY don't know of anything (other than mayhap another 1st party add-on) that could be "earth-shattering".

Luckily, between XF and Bob's add-ons, my current site fits my needs... the ONLY big issue is having to rely on Nobita/TrulongLV's social groups add-on (well, a GOOD calendar would be nice also).

A major update has been dragged out for a while. I can see their cloud offering interfering... but surely they could have been working on the base code in the background.

Was Mike THAT integral part of the production of XF?

If you followed vbulletin back in the Kier as GM days and then the early part of xenforo you know that Mike is the man as far as development went. When he took his hiatus at vbulletin during development on vb3 things stopped. He came back 2 years later and vb3 was completed in about 6 months. What is happening at xenforo is a repeat. Kier is probably hoping and waiting that Mike rides back in and bails him out.

With XF though, there are more than Mike & Kier involved... in fact, I'd say that Chris is probably equal to or may even exceed Kier OR Mike in coding ability.

Does Mike leaving negatively impact XF... most likely. Does it kill XF... I seriously doubt it as they have other competent coders on hand to take his place. Mike was not a "god" that was the end-all/be-all of XF. In fact, in many ways he and Kier may be a very strong detraction from the furtherance of the script.

Chris might be close to Mike, but Kier is the "visionary" I think. Replacing a lead dev with 2 capable add on devs isn't going to speed things up. You could add 2 more to that it still wouldn't help.

They should hire Bob and make him lead coder, shit will get done and quickly compared to these morons that can't ship anything in a timely fashion.

Maybe Bob should buy XF!!!!11@@!11

I don't know so much about that... who was it that actually "brought" XFMG to XenForo?

I think (personally) that Chris has a much better visionary position than either Mike or Kier do.

You say that "jokingly"... but they would do well to approach Bob to at LEAST purchase some of his 3rd party add-ons to integrate natively, and better yet to contract with him to maintain them for a period. I already know for a fact that he has NO desire to work directly for XF. He's looking forward to retiring and then the pursuits of leisure (along with coding of his add-ons) that brings.

There were 3 other devs at vbulletin when Mike went on sabbatical. Mike is a very good coder. He isn't a visionary. He can make another persons vision come true. Kier is not a very good coder. He was an addon developer that wasn't very good. What he is good at is bullshitting everyone into thinking he is better than he is.

Half joking, Bob would bring some cool shit to XF and get shit done compared to the pace they deliver today.

I left XF years ago for Discourse and some legacy IPB sites still running.

He isn't a visionary.

I really don't think anyone in charge at XF is a visionary.

As @Sandyman commented... I personally think that Bob would bring a LOAD of "new stuff" to XF... but in he, in my conversations with him, doesn't show ANY interest in direct interaction with the XF developers as far as providing another resource.

Ironically... Bob is ALSO interested in Astrophotography and Astronomy thanks to an uncle of his.

As to @Sandyman's comment on Discourse and legacy IPS sites.. the fact simply remains, they are lacking also. The issue will remain as to how to maintain (and centralize the discovery of) good content.

nope, nada.

Chris was just a PHP baby when XenForo was released, IIRC. We had some discussions with him other places before he was a XF dev. Mike and Kier were developers 10 years before Chris.

Chris is better at communicating, and that's what XF probably needs a better grasp on.

Yep.... XFMG was created by PHP baby and it was then bought obtained by XF as a 1st party add-on when the obtained the PHP baby that created it.
