13511 Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 It's rather simple Gary... the logic line for a guest poster most likely follows a different path/process/checks than the one does for a member. And since not many use that ability it's probably been something that was present for a while in their code base (odds are they refactored it into the 3.2 line) and it didn't rear it's head until some OS/SVC changes came about. 13511 Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 I don't think phpBB 3.1 is PHP 7.1 compatible - there are issues if I remember correctly. The 3.2 line is PHP 7 ready. And I'm pretty sure namecheap is not using nginx as a front end... Quote

And I'm pretty sure namecheap is not using nginx as a front end... nginx is just doing static caching, apache is calling php-fpm for php processing, which would do db writes, etc, nginx isn't calling php-fpm. OK, I wasted 20 mins on Gary and testing already, 25 mins more than he deserves from me. One good thing out of this, confirms that phpbb is a big pile of dog shit, looks like dog shit, the acp is dog shit, etc. Now I see why it's free. If it was a paid script that I or others would benefit from (except for Gary), I'd be all over it like a dog on a bone. 1 Quote Donald Trump is living RENT FREE in Tracy Perry/One-Up's head
13511 Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 yeah.. I'm not really that interested in trying to figure the issue out since I have no need nor desire to use phpBB. I may - just for shits and grins - try 3.2 on the site. Quote

13511 Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 Just fyi 3.1 and 3.2 worked fine with my setup. The issue is apparently related to NameCheap and their hosting implementation conflicting with phpBB. On a base install (initial cPanel setup and then creating the DB) the install of phpBB went fine, but guest posting is borked if using quotes. Quote

The funny (sad?) thing is, he knew it was namecheap...and he bought a new domain and hosting from them knowing they suck balls...only Gary. Thank you sir, may I have another mentality. Paul Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 This comment was made by Gary earlier, now it has been posted by a guest instead. We already know you're a piece of shit, Gary. You called my wife a whore numerous times and said Dave's kid was retarded, there's no need to hide your feelings from anyone. Quote

Edit: found it phpBB • Problem that has happened two times now Yep.. and he was pointed to it twice. I'm on chat support with NameCheap right now getting mod-security disabled to see if that's an issue. Quote
SneakyDave Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 Gary says he had mod_security already turned off, but who knows with him. 13511 Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 Gary says he had mod_security already turned off, but who knows with him. I wouldn't trust any details he provides They've also confirmed that mine is off.. and the issue is still there. The support person is currently checking to see exactly what I'm talking about. Got a feeling I may be getting bumped up to another tier. She just asked to stand by 10-15 minutes while she investigates the issue. Quote
13511 Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 (edited) OK.. initial feedback is it is due to the hardcoded max_execution_timeout setting of 30 that they have set on their servers. The script apparently exceeds that when using guest posting with quotes for some reason - they couldn't tell in their logs as there were no errors) but advised that their techs said the script needed optimization. I'm not going to get another cheap shared hosting account somewhere else to see what their hard coded max_execution_time is set at and I've relayed the information to the phpBB group so now it's on their heads. 22:25 Olga Samchuk: This value is set on the server by default, and you cannot modify it on your end. 22:25 Olga Samchuk: Because this is s global server limit. 22:26 Tracy Perry: So, no way to verify that it is the script itself that is the issue? Is there a php error log that I can relay to the phpBB developers? 22:26 Olga Samchuk: As far as I can see from the server logs, the script times out. 22:28 Tracy Perry: OK.. then that kind of follows what I originally thought that it is their logic path of the code that deals with guest posting... since it's not used that often, and apparently almost never on NameCheap it only shows it's head when the two are combined. I'll see if I can get the developers to look at it, but so far their response has been "go to a better hosting provider". 22:29 Olga Samchuk: Tracy, I am sorry that you face such inconveniences. But, unfortunately, we cannot increase the timeout limit on the shared server. 22:30 Tracy Perry: Thanks... I'll contact them for further feedback and see if maybe they will try to optimize that section of code... it occurs with the older 3.1 version and their newer 3.2 version. And don't worry, it's not an issue for me as I said, my sites are all ran on a dedicated server. I just got this account to help trouble shoot this for some other people and probably won't be using it after this is over. I like the punishment of maintaining my own servers. <grin> 22:31 Tracy Perry: Again, thanks and I'll relay this to the phpBB developers. It's then on their hands to figure it out and I can go back to playing with my IPS 4.1, Burning Board and XenForo sites. Edited June 13, 2017 by 13511 Quote
