It's rather simple Gary... the logic line for a guest poster most likely follows a different path/process/checks than the one does for a member. And since not many use that ability it's probably been something that was present for a while in their code base (odds are they refactored it into the 3.2 line) and it didn't rear it's head until some OS/SVC changes came about.

I don't think phpBB 3.1 is PHP 7.1 compatible - there are issues if I remember correctly. The 3.2 line is PHP 7 ready.

And I'm pretty sure namecheap is not using nginx as a front end...

nginx is just doing static caching, apache is calling php-fpm for php processing, which would do db writes, etc, nginx isn't calling php-fpm.

I'm well aware of what it's used for... but again, I don't think on the base namecheap shared hosting they use nginx for any content processing/caching.

OK, I wasted 20 mins on Gary and testing already, 25 mins more than he deserves from me. One good thing out of this, confirms that phpbb is a big pile of dog shit, looks like dog shit, the acp is dog shit, etc.

Just fyi 3.1 and 3.2 worked fine with my setup.

The issue is apparently related to NameCheap and their hosting implementation conflicting with phpBB. On a base install (initial cPanel setup and then creating the DB) the install of phpBB went fine, but guest posting is borked if using quotes.

The funny (sad?) thing is, he knew it was namecheap...and he bought a new domain and hosting from them knowing they suck balls...only Gary.

Yep.. and he was pointed to it twice. I'm on chat support with NameCheap right now getting mod-security disabled to see if that's an issue.

They've also confirmed that mine is off.. and the issue is still there. The support person is currently checking to see exactly what I'm talking about. Got a feeling I may be getting bumped up to another tier. She just asked to stand by 10-15 minutes while she investigates the issue.

OK.. initial feedback is it is due to the hardcoded max_execution_timeout setting of 30 that they have set on their servers. The script apparently exceeds that when using guest posting with quotes for some reason - they couldn't tell in their logs as there were no errors) but advised that their techs said the script needed optimization.

I'm not going to get another cheap shared hosting account somewhere else to see what their hard coded max_execution_time is set at and I've relayed the information to the phpBB group so now it's on their heads.

I'll see if I can get the developers to look at it, but so far their response has been "go to a better hosting provider".

And don't worry, it's not an issue for me as I said, my sites are all ran on a dedicated server. I just got this account to help trouble shoot this for some other people and probably won't be using it after this is over. I like the punishment of maintaining my own servers. <grin>
