True story...

18011085_10158609408065441_2268168110432954844_n.jpg?oh=162c02c4bdb857d5746ba210a114525b&oe=5987CDB3

In my younger years, being single, I think I experimented with all kinds of stuff. I probably don't even know what some of the stuff I was taking, at parties, or other events, and then about about a year or so, I just decided that that was enough. A lot of times, I wish I would have put down the bottle rather than the blunt, lol.

Anyway, my point is that I've never done heroin because I thought I'd REALLY like it too much. When my daughter was in treatment once, she had to be on morphine for pain for about a week, and was like flipping a switch as to her demeanor and pain level, and I felt a little bit of envy that I had never tried it.

Anyway, that's my story. I never really had a problem with drugs, I functioned pretty well, and I think I was lucky enough to decide that after a while, it wasn't in my best interested.

What's your story. Anything you tried but wished you hadn't? Anything you wish you could try?

I was never much of a smoker of things, I preferred to eat things or put them in my nose. I also wasn't much of a pill popper either.

I drank.

I drank waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much.

Then I drank some more.

....and some more.

2 DUI's, about 7 or 8 other alcohol related tickets and overnight stays in the drunk tank / jail cell ...

Finally decided enough was enough. USMC bound.

Drank socially a bit after that, then as my son got older, I just decided that I'd rather be with him or ready if he needed me and stopped altogether.

Don't think I've drank in 7 or 8 years.

As for the other, never tried anything. Had plenty of friends do it... just never was my thing.

Would you say the Marine Corps straightened you out or was it more of a maturity this g?

I had a really rough time in high school so I would get high and drink a 24 ounce beer before school and at lunch to make it through the day. Once I graduated I stopped doing all that shit.

Marine Corps showed me how my life could thrive in structure. I work much better in that scenario. Also, doing that, finishing boot... they kind of grind in in your head how you are truly one of the few... for once in my life, I was actually proud of something I had done. While in, my son was born, and I knew I never wanted to go back to the party scene.

They didn't really straighten much out, I think maturity kicked in, finally.

I don't do drugs and never have. I don't drink either.

I don't need these artificial props in life, and I would never have the time anyhow.

I noticed you didn't say "never have" with alcohol....

So, apparently at one point you felt the need to try out that "artificial prop". This might be the first time I've seen you come across as high and mighty, and oh so much better than everyone.

I'll help you with that ladder, you can come down from your perch at any time.

So, apparently at one point you felt the need to try out that "artificial prop".

Actually the consumption is not the artificial prop... the over consumption is (which gets the "buzz" on) - or the feeling that you "need" it to deal with reality.

With drugs, you also do them until you get similar effects of over-indulgence of the liquid spirits.

Drinking a glass or two (say of wine) because you like the flavor it has is not the same as puffing a blunt or two to get your "buzz on". It's the over-indulgence that is the problem. With most drugs you are taking them for the effect they cause on you. The same can be said about alcohol that is being drank by itself.

I've never talked to with anyone who liked the "taste" of marijuana or the "smell" of coke as the snorted it up their nose or the feel of the needle sliding in as they injected their liquid of choice - it was always the results of performing the action that was important to them.

I'm 53 and have never done illicit drugs (nor abused prescription ones) in my life. I've been "drunk" about 4-5 times, and never when I was in public (private party or at home).

Personally never had a desire to let something else take control of me. Addiction (specifically to alcohol) apparently runs in my family as my grandfather (dad's side) was an alcoholic, my dad was an alcoholic and my 2 brothers and sister were alcoholics (in fact, one still is even though it is killing her due to medical complications).

I find it interesting how some people are drawn to drinking, but never do any other drugs, or maybe have never tried much alcohol or drugs, or people that somehow fall into terrible habits with both or either. It doesn't matter your race, class or upbringing it seems. Everybody seems to have their own opinions and vices about those sins.

I don't think anybody that indulges considers it a prop, maybe more of a societal norm or something. My family has had numerous alcoholics in it so much that out of 8 kids, my brother and I are the only ones that drink. There isn't any alcohol at any family functions, unless my brother and I are hosting them, of course, lol. I'm the only one out of the family that has "admitted" to using any hard drugs. I'm not sure why I thought I'd try them out. Maybe just out of pure boredom.

I can respect the opinion of people that have never wanted to let something bring your inhibitions down that would make a person uncomfortable, but I think that's also a factor of why people get into alcohol and drugs in the first place.

I've done every drug there was in my youth. I loved LSD and Mescaline. I only tried heroin twice. Didn't do anything for me. Same for coke. Give me some blotter or window pane and that's all I needed. Used to eat white crosses like they were candy so I could make it work after a night of hard partying.

I haven't touched any drugs in almost 40 years. When my first wife got pregnant with my first daughter I stopped everything including drinking. Now I'll have a few beers and couple shots about once a month.

maybe more of a societal norm or something.

That.

Drinking for me was a social thing. Problem is, I did it socially every day, and well past normal "social" limits, which then became the issue.

Exactly that... the social interaction is not "bad" from doing it but as you stated it's when it goes beyond the social limits that the issue devolves into problems.

Hell, you'll find that I was an anachronism as an LEO from the 80's. I never used illicit substances but was fully behind the legalization of marijuana then (and still am). I've had WAY fewer issues in my career with potheads than I have those drunk on the spirit of the grape/grain.

Now, the harder drugs have more impact (negative) on interactions. PCP and "speed" were the two worst.

I only had fun intoxicated... surrounded by friends, family, etc... it's comical. Wake up next day, not so comical. Wake up in the cell, well... sucks. Hahahaha. I've seen many angry/fighting drunks, that never interested me. I'd take up for my buddies, sure, but other than that, mine was all enjoyable (other than the "occifer" run-ins... hahahah)

Some folks ARE actually "jolly" drunks - but WAY to many think that they are exempt from any social graces. :scream:

That's has always been my experience. Sometimes I wish smoking pot was more acceptable than drinking. Alcohol's the original gateway drug.

It's not WHAT drugs you're strung out on they care about so much as WHOSE.

What's high and mighty about not needing the artificial prop of drugs? Or drink? Some people do need it, I accept that and it's just the way it is. My artificial prop is arguably food. We've all got one somewhere.

Yes I've had the odd drink in the past, never much though as I really don't like the taste.

That's one of my big issues with it. I do like a nice tequila sunrise when out eating Mexican food - as long as I'm not the vehicle driver - or a Shiner Blonde when out smoking some meat on the pit (that's the only beer I've ever found the taste decent, and it's not much hops flavor to it).

I mainly use wines/beers for cooking. Always have a 6 pack of decent dark beer in the fridge for when I do any beer butt chickens or the briskets/pulled pork.

Picked up a 6 pack of Shiner Strawberry Blonde.... kinda unique as it has a strawberry flavor to the Blonde beer I normally would drink - but not something I'd want to drink often. Trying to figure out what I could use it with to cook that the strawberry flavor might enhance.

They aren't REAL ribs unless they come from a mighty porky pig!!!! :yum

The beef ribs serve a dual purpose food for me and the bones are a treat for the dogs.
